The Engagement Ring Guide Is Up!

Finally the engagement ring buying guide is done! I’ve been working on this for a while now, and I finally finished it. I think it’s a pretty good, comprehensive guide and it should answer most of the questions that someone might have.

Feedback is welcome! Please leave a comment if you have any questions or feedback about the guide.

Using the Ideal Scope for Diamonds

The Ideal-Scope is an awesome tool for measuring the cut quality of a diamond. It shows how much light the diamond reflects and is a great visual example of judging the brilliance of a diamond.

Here’s an example of an ideal-scope image of a diamond: Ideal Scope Good

This is an example of a very good diamond. Red indicates light that is reflected back, and white shows light leakage. More red is better, so this is a well cut diamond.

And here’s an example of a poorly cut diamond. Ideal Scope Bad

Notice all the white spots. This means that a lot of light is being lost inside the diamond, and it won’t be as brilliant as a better cut diamond.

You can see more information at the official Ideal-Scope website, including their Ideal-Scope reference chart.

James Allen has a collection of Hearts and Arrows diamonds, and they have Ideal-Scope images of all their diamonds in this collection.
