Round/Brilliant Cut Diamond Buying Guide

The round, or brilliant, cut diamond is the traditional, standard diamond shape that is most widely used today. It is also the most popular diamond shape for engagement rings.

I have created these guidelines for you to follow so that you can get a beautiful diamond for your ring. There are different attributes that are used to grade diamonds, and they are important to pay attention to so that you’ll get the best diamond that you possibly can. Don’t worry if you don’t know anything about these, my guidelines will make it simple.

The first step is to make sure you you’re shopping at a reputable dealer. James Allen is my #1 recommended place to get a diamond ring. They have a great reputation, an A+ rating from the BBB, and an excellent selection. You can read my full review of James Allen here.

Now, when you’re choosing your diamond, make sure that the diamond’s characteristics fit these guidelines to ensure that you’re getting a high-quality diamond.

  • Make sure the cut is either TrueHearts, Ideal, or Premium. This is the most important factor in judging a diamond’s quality – a better diamond cut means a more brilliant diamond with more sparkle.
  • The color should be D, E, F, G, H, or I. Don’t spend the extra money to get a D color unless you really want to – the difference is rarely noticed and the savings on price are significant.
  • The clarity should be IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, or VS2. Check the diamond photo – as long as the diamond is eye-clean, you’ll be fine.
  • The carat depends on how big of a diamond you want – the larger the carat, the bigger the diamond. Purchase the largest carat diamond that you can afford, as long as the otherĀ  characteristics are good (especially the cut).

Here are some additional criteria for your diamond. These aren’t as important as the ones already listed, but they are still fairly important. On the James Allen diamond search, click the button that says “More Search Options” to see these criteria.

  • Depth should be anything from 59% to 63%.
  • Table should be anything from 54% to 62%.

These two criteria aren’t mandatory, though – if you can’t find a diamond that fits in these ranges for depth and table, then don’t worry about it.
